Sohm & Kracher – When World-Class Meets Terroir

When star sommelier Aldo Sohm and Gerhard Kracher met in New York in 2004, it quickly became clear: this was more than just a friendship in the making. A shared passion for great wines, fine food – and Grüner Veltliner – brought them together.

Since 2009, they have combined their expertise under the Sohm & Kracher label. The grapes come from top vineyard sites in the Weinviertel region, where old vines grow on limestone-rich soils. The result: expressive, age-worthy wines of international stature – with an unmistakably Austrian soul.

2019 Grüner Veltliner Single Vineyard
From Pulkau and aged for 4.5 years in a large stück oak vat, the 2019Grüner Veltliner Single Vineyard shows an intense yellow color with a greenish hue. The nose is spectacularly complex, very elegant and refined yet dense and far from being just fruity. On the palate, this is a seamless, refined and highly elegant Veltliner that's everything but Veltliner. The 2019 is full-bodied, elegant and entirely driven by its terroir. The finish is intense, dense and juicy, refined and saline. This is the greatest Veltliner I have ever tasted from the Weinviertel. (Wine Advocate) Fantastic maturing nose of candied citrus peel, caramelized pears, toasted nuts, floral honey and mushrooms. The textural complexity of the medium- to full-bodied palate is no less exciting. I love the interplay of delicate candied fruit character and mineral acidity in the long, super-elegant finish. Drink or hold. 95/100 Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.com From very old vines in the Pulkautal/Weinviertel and aged on the fine lees in a single 1,000-liter Slawonian oak foudre for four years, the 2019 Grüner Veltliner Single Vineyard opens with a deep, clear and elegant, refined and spicy bouquet of ripe yellow fruits. Full-bodied, rich and elegant on the palate, this is a powerful and quite mighty, forceful Veltliner with ripe acidity, fine tannins yet also some bitters and not the energy of the St Georg Veltiner. It's impressive yet less. 14% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in May 2024. - The Wine Advocate, 94/100 Reviewed by: Stephan Reinhardt

2022 Chardonnay St. Georg
2022 Chardonnay St. Georg

The 2023 Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben is from the Pulkau Valley in the Weinviertel, from four parcels, with the youngest vines 30 years old and the oldest over 55. The wine was half fermented in stainless steel, half in used barriques. It then spent five months on fine lees. Nettle, pepper and tender peach are fragrant on the nose. The palate is beautifully bright, with vivacious freshness and a yellow plum fruitiness, again with a gentle herbal savor. By Anne Krebiehl, Vinous
